Who We Are and What We Do
What is Brahma Kumaris?
The organisation was established in India during the 1930s by Brahma Baba and maintains spiritual headquarters in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. International expansion began in 1971, with approximately one million students across 110+ countries. BK offers spiritual education and reflective practices for people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
What are the aspirations of Brahma Kumaris?
Core goals include fostering deeper self-understanding, affirming human dignity and goodness, encouraging consciousness shifts, rebuilding spiritual connection with the Divine, promoting universal brotherhood, supporting community betterment, and establishing non-violent human-environment relationships.
How does Brahma Kumaris fulfil these aspirations?
Through international centre networks offering Raja Yoga meditation courses, lectures, workshops, and personal development programmes. The organisation also engages in community outreach projects addressing local needs and coordinates global humanitarian initiatives.
How does Brahma Kumaris support the local community?
They conduct seminars on meditation and personal development in community centres, prisons, hospitals, homes for the elderly, drug rehabilitation units, schools and local businesses. Specialised courses address anger management, positive thinking, self-esteem, stress reduction, women's empowerment, environmental awareness, leadership development, and youth engagement.
Teachings and Way of Life
What is the core curriculum?
The Foundation Course in Raja Yoga meditation anchors Brahma Kumaris teachings. It covers consciousness and self-realisation, connection and relationship with God, the law of karma, the cycle of time, the Tree of Life, and a spiritual lifestyle. Part 1 teaches meditation practice; Part 2 explores deeper philosophical teachings.
What are the four main pillars?
Study of spiritual knowledge, meditation practice, virtue cultivation, and service to others form the foundational framework for personal development.
Are there lifestyle disciplines?
Recommended (not mandatory) practices include vegetarian/vegan eating and celibacy. These support clarity and concentration and are viewed as supporting spiritual growth rather than strict requirements. No specific dress code exists, though modest attire is appropriate. White clothing is preferred within BK communities, symbolising simplicity, purity, cleanliness and truth.
Funding and Participation
How is Brahma Kumaris funded?
Operations rely on voluntary contributions from benefiting students and philanthropic support for specific humanitarian projects. No membership fees exist.
Why are courses free?
From inception, leadership believed spiritual knowledge is a basic right of every human being, following founder Brahma Baba's commitment to universal access regardless of demographics or finances.
Who can participate?
Adults are welcome to all activities; those 16+ may join group classes independently; younger participants require parental accompaniment. Child-protection policies align with local jurisdictions.
